Welcome to the schlock that is Alien Apocalypse. This low budget film stars Bruce Campbell as Dr. Ivan Hood (the character is named after Sam Raimi’s older brother Ivan). In the year 2049 earth has been overrun by alien bugs. They have enslaved mankind and are forcing us to clear cut our forests as wood is their favorite food.
Ivan and Kelly (Xena’s sexy lesbian Renee O’Connor) and two other astronauts have been away from earth for forty years in order to launch a probe into deep space. When they return they are also captured and turned into slaves to harvest wood. Well, Ivan is pissed that the human race has bent over and taken it from these space bugs and has not revolted. He escapes from the saw mill but Kelly (the woman he loves) does not make it out. Ivan decides to form his own band of misfits to invade the saw mill, save the woman he loves and free the human race.
Not the most imaginative plot in the world. Hell, in Army of Darkness Bruce has to get a band of misfits together to fight off the Deadites, so this isn’t even a stretch for Bruce.
Well, as I stated, this is LOW budget. Shot is Bulgaria, the scenery is beautiful. But the effects, costumes, wigs and props all look pretty cheap. But that’s kind of what makes this film an instant classic. This movie does not try to be important. It’s a cheapy and it plays to the cheap seats. Aliens bite the heads off of people. Lots of cheesy battle scenes and bad dialogue. It definitely jumps this film to the top of the awesomely bad pile. Bruce is great as usual but the rest of the cast is what is so spectacular.
Other than Bruce and a few other actors, all of the cast were in fact Bulgarian so like 90% of the dialogue had to be voice overed so the characters would not have accents. The dubbing is not always perfect, so it adds to the flavor of awesomeness of the film.
Here is my favorite screen shot, this is the first time the aliens bite the head off of a human. Lots of spurting blood.
On the DVD there is a fantastic commentary with the writer/director and Bruce. It’s always nice to hear Bruce talk about the cheesy movies he stars in.
There is a also a behind the scenes montage and a bio on Bruce Campbell.
FINAL ANALYSIS!
This is an awesomely bad movie starring my favorite B actor. If you’re up for 90 minutes of spurting headless corpses, green alien blood, bad acting, cheesy dialogue and horrible stunt choreography go rent this right now. You will not be disappointed!
