EURO-TRIP

Kicking and screaming. I was dragged kicking and screaming to go see the movie Roadtrip. But in the end, I actually thought it was a very, VERY funny movie. So when the producers of Roadtrip released Eurotrip, I thought there is no way this was going to be as funny as Roadtrip. In fact, I refused to see Eurotrip in the theatre. I even refused to rent Eurotrip. I actually did not even watch Eurotrip until it was on HBO and I could watch it for free. I guess lightning can strike twice because I laughed my ass off at this movie. It is a really funny film.

Eurotrip starts off at the high school graduation of Scott Thomas (Scott Mechlowicz). Usually this is a very happy day but for Scott it proves to be devastating. His high school sweetheart, Fiona (played by Smallville’s beautiful Kristin Kreuk) dumps him and reveals she’s been cheating on him throughout their entire relationship. Scott’s best friend, Cooper (Jacob Pitts), drags him to a graduation party where we meet their twin friends Jamie (Travis Wester) and Jennifer (Harriet the Spy’s Michelle Trachtenberg). Jamie and Jenny are going to be backpacking across Europe for the summer and they invite Cooper and Scott but both of them have internships.

At the party a bombshell is dropped on Scott. Fiona has been cheating on him with the lead singer to a band (a VERY funny cameo by Matt Damon) and the singer has written a song about her cheating called “Scotty Doesn’t Know”. The band plays the song with Fiona dry humping Matt Damon the entire time and with lyrics like “I did her on his birthday,” I could not stop laughing.

Scott decides to forget his summer job and plans to travel to Europe to meet up with his dream girl/German pen pal, Mieke and sweep her off her feet. So Cooper and Scott meet up with the twins and as they travel across Europe wackiness ensues.

While this movie is not as funny as the greatest American in Europe film, European Vacation, it is still really funny. Imagine American Pie but in other countries. I told you, it did not look funny at all to me from the previews, but I now have it as part of my collection.

So on to the DVD.

I bought the Unrated Edition which is the only edition you should watch. The extended scenes are much funnier than those in the regular edition, plus there’s more nudity and who doesn’t want more nudity?

There are a few VERY ingenious things with this DVD. You could tell the three writers/directors of the film (Jeff Schaffer, Alec Berg and David Mandel, who wrote for Seinfeld) are BIG movie fans and wanted to do justice for their DVD. They made a DVD for DVD fans.

First of all, they put three scene indexes on the DVD. The first is the typical scene index found on any movie DVD. The second is a scene index to jump directly to scenes extended for the Unrated DVD or scenes added altogether for the Unrated DVD.

How ingenious is this? How often have you bought a DVD and you just want to see just where they added stuff for the director’s cut. This takes care of that really easily. Finally, there’s the nudity scene index. This allows any guy who’s home alone to skip directly to the boobies!!! Brilliant!!!

Another brilliant thing they added was they bought a bootleg copy of the DVD, did a commentary on it and put it on their own DVD. The filmmakers bootlegged the bootlegger!!! How awesome is that?

Furthermore, there are lots of deleted scenes that didn’t even make it into the Unrated Edition of the movie. But these are not throwaways. There are still some very funny scenes that are actually fun to watch. This includes an alternate ending to the movie that was considered to be too much of a downer and was taken out and a new ending was shot.

Also, if you’ve seen the movie you know all about the nude beach scene. On the DVD there is a making of the nude beach scene.

There are also three music videos from the film including a sing along to “Scotty Doesn’t Know”.

There are also some other bonuses but these were the biggies.

Finally….COMMENTARIES! The filmmakers didn’t do one but they did TWO commentaries and this is the greatest feature ever on a DVD. First there is the regular boring commentary that is full of boring technical and behind-the-scenes stuff. But then the filmmakers did a second “party commentary”. This is basically where the directors watch the film with you and you play a drinking game with them. How fun would this be with a group of people? That’s just good, fun, filmmaking.

All-in-all, this is a fun and funny movie with an EXCELLENT DVD package. I cannot stress enough that you should NEVER rent or buy the rated edition of this film. But my final analysis for the Unrated Edition:

BUY THIS DVD!
