IDIOCRACY

Beavis and Butthead first appeared on Liquid Television when I was in high school. I have loved Mike Judge ever since. Judge, the creator of B & B and King of the Hill and director of the must-see film, Office Space, is a comic genius. His latest film, Idiocracy, is no exception.

It is a crime that Idiocracy was never released in theatres. But now that it is on DVD, I command all of my loyal readers to go rent it immediately. This is the best high-concept, low-brow comedy I was ever seen.

In the late 20th century mankind is starting a very pathetic evolution. Due to over-breeding by stupid people and under-breeding by intelligent people, we have started to dumb down our species. With no natural predator, natural selection has become obsolete and we have started to create a breed of retards. By the year 2505, our species has devolved to everyone acting like Beavis and Butthead.

In 2005, very average Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) is selected by the Army to be genetically frozen. Due to an oversight, he is frozen for 500 years. When he awakens he is plunged into the idiot world that has become America (or Uhh-merica as it is known in the film). To his surprise, he is now the smartest man in the world.

As Joe copes with the idiocy of his fellow Uhh-mericans, tries to find a way back to his time and gets thrust into the crumbling government, hilarity ensues.

I loved every second of this film. The concept works on so many levels. We ALL know morons and we ALL cringe when we find out they are breeding. The film also slaps idiotic films and idiotic TV by showing what the most popular television shows and films of the future have become. Everything Judge puts in the film could very well happen. As funny as it is, it is also frightening!

Wilson puts in a fine performance. I always thought of him as average, so he fits the part very well.

Here is my favorite screen shot:

This is what advertising has devolved into in Uhh-merica.

On the DVD:

Just a few deleted scenes. None of them add anything to the film.

I definitely wish there was a commentary track, but alas there is not.

Final analysis:

With shit like Norbit, Little Man, Night at the Museum, Epic Movie and Wild Hogs are being passed as comedy (and making bank at the box office), I am super pissed this tremendously funny film was swept under the rug. Everyone looking for a good comedy, anyone who is a Mike Judge fan and everyone who loved Office Space needs to see this movie right now.
