STAR TREK

Having known absolutely nothing about Star Trek's characters, history, or mythology I was a little skeptical that I would even find the slightest hint of enjoyment or accessibility of this movie. When someone starts speaking to me about their knowledge of the Trek all I can hear is staticy white noise. Did you know there was a character called Chekov. Fascinating!

The first thing I can think of when it comes to this film is how much I enjoyed it. I couldn't have been any further flabergasted by this because I remember clearly in my youth trying to get why Star Trek was so popular and why fans of Trek and Wars couldn't get along. All I discovered in my attempt was how frustratingly bored one could become watching a program on TV. Bored to the point where removing my eyes from their sockets would have been a far more entertaining enterprise. What I was afraid of was that the same boredom would follow me to the movie theatre, but fortunately I have adopted a new position on bad movies and transdescend this plateau of pain into a place where I find a sort of enjoyment.

Glad to say that this was not the case, as I really enjoyed STAR TREK. This infusion of young blood into the series was a smart, calculated move that was exactly the shot in the arm this series needed. Because I can say that I am now interested in the continuing voyages of this gutsy and witty crew. Leading them to where no man has gone before is Chris Pine as the youn James T. Kirk. He's charming, smarmy, and confident. Everything I'm not sure Kirk ever was but I know Shatner sure as hell was. Chris Pine actually gives quite a performance as the young captain destined for greatness. The strength and vulnerability behind his eyes is captivating enough to make you care deeply about his struggle and journey.

Hands down my favorite performance has got to be from Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy. Urban is consistant in his ability to pick really good parts in movies, and make the most of them. Eomer from LOTR, whoever he played in DOOM.

Perhaps the best thing that can be said about this movie is how accessible it is to lame men like me in all things Trek. My girlfriend who is a Trek fan enjoyed the nuances and in jokes that were clearly aimed at the fans, including why one character in particular, Captain Pike, is in a wheelchair. But to me, I liked the funny bits, and the action bits.

If there is one way to see this film, it has to be on the IMAX screen. It is just too damn big to play on a normal theater sized screen. So if you get the chance, check out on IMAX if you find yourself lucky enough to be near one.

That's all I can really say about it. Great flick, awsome fun. Go explore.
